Tips & Tricks of a Build
It’s fair to say that working full-time and building or renovating a home isn’t the easiest task. With trades working the same hours that you do, and the rush around during the weekend to get things done, we spoke to previous My Kitchen Rules contestant, who recently finished a build herself, to find out what tips she had to balance working and building.
How would you describe the style of your home?
Our style is definitely ultra modern! We love the luxurious feel to the home, hence why we introduced the copper lights, the dark oak floors, and the gold Calcutta marble in the kitchen. The overall canvas of the home is definitely monochrome so that it can work with any type of furniture. However, we do love keeping it within the contemporary architectural style. We spent of time focusing our attention to detail to ensure it was exactly what we wanted. We also introduced a lot of natural light with all the floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors, which is extremely important in softening an ultra lux modern style home.
Knowing your way around the kitchen, what is your favourite appliance in the kitchen?
Definitely our Zip Tap! I use it for absolutely everything. Not having to wait for boiling water saves time and I love the fact that I have fresh, cold filtered water available whenever I want. The fact that it also has sparkling water is a huge bonus! The design of the tap matches our home too.
What were some struggles you had throughout the build? How did you overcome them?
Keeping within our budget! It is always difficult to foresee what everything will cost along the way but you have to be prepared to sometimes compromise on some items and prioritize where to spend the money instead of blowing the budget completely out.
How did you best time manage during the build?
We have a bit of experience with property and time management so fortunately, we didn’t struggle in this regard. We love to plan for absolutely every situation and when you have a set plan for most possible scenarios you can make decisions pretty quickly.
What advice do you have for someone trying to build their dream home?
Unless you have an unlimited budget, be prepared to compromise. Not everything will go to plan so don’t be too stressed when you have to come up with an option b! Enjoy the ride and be open to suggestions and ideas from your sub-contractors as they are the experts in their field. Enjoy the experience and you will love the end result.
